I've talked to you before about my lovely neighbor, Kelsey. I couldn't be luckier when it comes to neighbors, and over time we've become good friends. We have loved bonding over creative projects, all things seasonal, and even have the same birthday.
One thing we'd both love to get better at is photography. It is so frustrating to spend money on a nice digital SLR camera, and then leave it on automatic mode and basically use it like a point and shoot because it's intimidating to learn anything more. We know the best way to get better at anything is just by doing it, even when you're really bad at it, and eventually you'll become not so bad at it. So we're diving in and taking on a challenge. Each month we will shoot all kinds of pictures, and then post our favorite shots on our blogs, and share what we've learned along the way. The rules are simple. We must shoot in manual mode only, and we share at least one picture every month. We have no goals of becoming professional photographers at this point, but want to expand our knowledge of all things aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and white balance

Our hope is that after months of forcing ourselves to take risks and experiment, something will click!
So, without further ado, here's my inaugural photo for the month of October...
This photo was taken in Sedona on a trip with some friends visiting from Wisconsin. (A post on that visit soon) It's not a great picture by any means, but what excited me about this one was that I was working on depth of field, and it pretty much worked. I was focusing on the right larger flower, and I had my aperture set to a lower f-stop (f4 I believe) to get the flower in focus and the background blurry. It was one of the first times I had intentionally set the camera for what I thought would capture something specific, and it actually did! Happy aperture dance!
Be sure to stop over and check out Kelsey's photos at her blog as well!
